Weyerhaeuser
recently closed their lumber mills in Aberdeen and Cosmopolis,
Washington because of high operating costs. Over 340 workers
lost their jobs and the State is losing more tax revenue than it
was gaining from our excessively high unemployment tax.
Unemployment tax in Washington is more than
four times the average rate in nine other states with
Weyerhaeuser operations. Washington legislators like “hidden”
taxes, such as the unemployment tax, because they are not
separately charged to consumers and not obvious to the voters.
Nevertheless, businesses are forced to pass on indirect taxes to
the consumer twice-once by higher prices, and again by the loss
of jobs. So, once again, our jobs went to a state with lower
unemployment taxes.
